Richard, there's nothing that can compare to the surface produced with an airbrush or spray equipment. Two acrylic paints that work well and dry to an absolutely matte finish are Holbein's Acryla Gouache (not Acryla acrylics) and Plaka.

For an almost matte finish, Liquitex acrylin IN JARS are the way to go. The paint in jars has considerable more pigment load than in the tubes and it sprays very well.
