Have you tried spraying the paint on. I recommend it for FLAT if you really want flat, uneventful paint surface. In acrylics, if you must use a regular brush, it's simply a pain, but work with a plan, dont dilute the paint too much(if at all ) work swiftly and keeping a wet edge helps. In oils,i have used Stand Oil in the paint to eliminate the brush strokes,(a little goes a long way and it wont dry overnight). In oils also you could go over a painted area with a soft badger hair brush to soften any harsh stroke evidence.

I'd have to say that spraying comes to mind first, and with that the words"PREPARATION IS 95% OF THE JOB" which seem to ring especially true with airbrush work or spraying in general(and the other side of that coin reads:"CLEAN YOUR FRIGGING SPRAY TOOLS WELL AND YOUR NEXT SPRAY SESSION WILL GO SMOOTHLY".
