>>>Does anyone out there have any experience with modern alternatives to lumber store materials as supports for panel painting? <<<
We have had excellent results with GatorBord. It's strong, exceptionally light and has showed no signs of problems for ten years. The surface is very slick, so it requires a thorough sanding to create a mechanical bond with the ground. Thus far, we have used acrylic "gesso," real gesso and white lead. The white lead grounds do not need a sizing and can be applied directly to the sanded surface.
