I've been considering marinating my old brushes in a vinaigrette and serving them on a bed of empty paint tubes.
I prefer to work with a clean brush. From experts like Jacques Turner, it appears that he recommends it too.
Sure, we can find excellentpainters who, despite some bad practices, managed to paint great pictures. Over the years I've known many writers who, in trying to emulate Hemingway and others, became drunks in their own right. It would be a foolish person who would say aloud that, by drinking Hemingway's favorite drink, they will become good writers -- but they must believe it otherwise they wouldn't do it.
Rembrandt probably ate smoked herring and, judging from the puffy skin, drank copious quantities of beer. Will herring and beer make you paint like Rembrandt? Hell no! But it will make you look like him.
