: It seems to be thinned stand oil with damar and thinner. It handles much like Old Hollands painting medium which is very thin then becomes tacky.
If it is true as you say that this is simply the standard Ralph Mayer damar
medium reissued as a secret 17th century formula then there is some deception
in the ad since it says that no resins are added and that the oil is made according
to an early recipe (modern stand oil i.e. oil polymerized at high temperature
in the absence of oxygen is not mentioned in the early accounts nor is damar
resin which came into use in the late 19th century)
