: : James Morton suggested using non-drying cooking oil...??? All I have is Olive oil, is that ok to keep the brushes in...and how about mineral oil?<<<
:
: Oil is not a cleaner. Non-drying cooking oil gets under the ferrules and loosens
the adhesive causing the bristles to shed.
: I am surprised that no one has suggested hair conditioner, skin moisturizer or Crisco.
I have been keeping my brushes in non-drying vegetable oil for twenty years
(ever since I read the recommendation to do so in Thomas Sully's 1873 treatise)
and have never noticed that the bristles have become loosened and fallen out.
As I said before, the advantage of not drying out the bristles by using harsh
solvents or soap and water far out weigh any conjectural disadvantage that one
might conceive.
