: Could anyone please enlighten as to the techniques on painting that Caravaggio used? If anyone could be of help, I'd love to hear from you.

Two things might be worth bearing in mind in regard to reconstructing Caravaggio's
technique. He worked directly (little underpainting) on a rather dark brown
ground as did many painters of his time. Recent research suggests that he used
an egg tempera heightening white perhaps applying it over undried flesh passages.
There is not a great deal of glazing in his technique.
