The answer was, yes, all 4 hooves leave the ground for an instant. Of course, maybe Muybridge & the horse were in cahoots to win the bet. ;-)
: : The name of the photographer who did those motion studies was Eadweard
Muybridge (or Edweard Muybridge--it's a weird spelling). The story goes that
he was commissioned by Leland Stanford (of university fame) to make the pictures
because Stanford had made a bet on whether horses' hooves were ever all off
the ground during a gallop. I'm not sure what the answer was.
