:Assuming that Rubens used it as is maintained by Maroger, I would not count
him as one of the great technicians ; his manner is quite mannered - if you
get my meaning - glib and irritatingly clever like superficial wit posing as
wisdom.
My experience with Maroger medium is the same as yours. But what you say about
Rubens is fightin' words. He's the real deal, unlike Sargent, and that ilk.
And this from someone who likes the neo-classicists: Ingres, David, et al. As
is always the case, the exemplar of a school or tradition is one thing, the
army of imitators quite another. Just think of all the putrid Raphael wannabes
like Bouguereau. I couldn't look at Raphael for years without seeing Bouguereau’s
self-conscious, sentimental crap . And not to mention the army of impressionists
wannabe's who make it hard to look at the originals.
