Jack's original question was a technical one, and the original responses he received, both from you and others, addressed his technical concerns. He may, in fact, also be interested in your particular philosophical views on painting, however to ridicule advice or information contrary to your views serves no useful purpose. Art technicians (conservators) provide a legitimate source of technical information that he, and you as well, would be foolish to disregard. Whether or not specific artistic considerations conflict with or overide technical considerations should be a matter for individual artists to determine for themselves.
: My advice is to take his advice if you want to feel secure. Thus far, the methods suggested guarantee me an open field with less competition. Anyone who removes themselves from the list of my competitors is to be encouraged. Listen to the conservators. It's like taking the advice of an embalmer on what you should eat to stay healthy.
: Making a painting requires the painter to be alive. Restoring a painting
means that the painter is dead. I'm not convinced that s from beyond
the grave are useful in teacjing us how to apply paint in an artistic fashion.
However, they are useful to people who are concerned with technical aspects
of paint...like the paint chemists as Sherwin_Williams and Sears.
