>>>This means, to me, making the best art I can, using the best methods I know, with the best materials. Should it be otherwise?<<<

It means the same to me, but when I bought my last car I did not expect that it would last three to four hundred years without any effort on my part. We have a classic wood boat that's 50 years old and requires a lot of maintenance every season. That means that, like the serious art collectors, WE do the maintaining. It's not built in. No matter how well the boat was built the vicissitudes of time pull on it. Should I have expected it to be maintainance free? Was it the boat builder's duty to make sure that the boat would maintain itself in pristine condition for half a century? Why is it the painter's duty to see to it that his painting lasts for centuries, even if it means using tortuous methods that make painting and expession difficult or impossible? Should the boatbuilder have listened to the advice of an aircraft mechanic on how to preserve the boat? Then why should a painter listen to a restorer who knows nothing about the handling qualities needed to produce an effect?

Thus far my paintings have lasted (and outlasted) my clients. AFter a period of time they are merely mementos for the grandchildren. Although I have a healthy self-respect, unlike those people who are overly concerned about their work lasting for centuries, I have not got nearly the towering egotism required to drive me to think that my work MUST be preserved at all cost...even if it's at the cost of improved artistic expression.

The first concern is artistic expression
