When working on large portraits that require fine portrait linen that is too delicate to stretch for distances without sagging, I either stretch sailcloth and size it, then stretch the linen over it, leaving a small airspace but plenty of support. Or I'll use a lining wax/resin to adhere it to a heavy linen. This is done before stretching and it requires two strong men to deal with it because it's moree like stretching a hide than stretching canvas. I've never had any problems with the lining adhesive affecting the portrait linen (which is already primed).
