Manipulating images in Photoshop as source for painting
I use photos as source material for my painting and I have lately hit upon the idea of scanning my negatives and working from the photographic image on the computer monitor (a 31" VGA monitor which I have placed next to my easel). I find that this is in many ways easier than working from a print in so much as I can zoom in on an area that would be difficult to see in the print (I have poor eyesight) and -- more especially -- I am able to manipulate my photos in Photoshop to achieve exactly what I want in terms of color, contrast, saturation, etc. I am now experimenting with the use of the filters in the filters menu to obtain effects resembling those of certain Old Masters; for instance, by using the Median and Blur filters I am able to obtain effects which approximate very closely those obtained by Vermeer with his use of the uncorrected optics of the primitive camera i.e. a soft focus, "facetted" look. This is a long winded way of asking if any of you have tried using Photoshop of alter your photos to
obtain certain effects. I suspect that the use of such computer graphic aids is more widespread than many know.
