: Not to change the subject of previous postings, but can anyone out there
speak from experience regarding the differences, advantages or disadvantages
of using PVA vs Rabbit Skin glue for sizing canvas or panels? I'm mostly interested
in technical pros & cons, as opposed to emotional preference.
: Thanks.
Wax-resin lining adhesive might be an interesting alternative. I experimented
with a combination of paste and wax-resin adhesive recommended in Robert Massey's
book and found it to be very fine. The wax is very stable and water resistant.
It is reversible with heat. There are a few caveats though: it requires a hot
iron or ideally a vacuum hot table; one cannot apply raw unprimed canvas to
panel with it as it tends to strike through to the front of the canvas making
the subsequent application of priming difficult (impossible?), the dismounting
and application of another adhesive is impossible as the wax has penetrated
the fibers and cannot be removed. But if you can rise above its difficulties
, it would, I think, be vastly superior as a reversible adhesive to paste and
most certainly glue in terms of durability.
