If you are interested in what art conservators say (at least one art conservator), I'll offer this quote from my recent correspondence, on a related subject, with Ross Merrill, Chief of Conservation, National Gallery of Art: ..."For rabbit skin glue, or any hide glue, a small variation can result in a significant dimensional change. As the ground/paint structure becomes more brittle with age, the dimensional changes in the glue result in cracking of the ground/paint structure. It is thought that the glue sizing of canvas paintings is probably responsible for 80-90% of the cracks in the paint film."

: Actually, you are both right, however, craftmanship and artistry, it seems to me, are not mutually exclusive notions. They work in tandem, one supporting the other, each equally as important as the other. It seems just as reasonable to value information on permanence and durability from art conservators and restorers as it is to value instruction on theory, method or conception from working professional artists, or qualified teachers. In addition, if you make your living selling your artwork, you are also a businessman (or woman), and you have the same responsibility to produce quality products for your clients as any other type of business. This means, to me, making the best art I can, using the best methods I know, with the best materials. Should it be otherwise?

: : >>>I couldn't disagree more. I expect my students to respect and cherish their materials, and discipline themselves to understand their strengths and weaknesses. They must respect what they do enough to use only the best materials and employ them to the very best of their ability. <<<

: : Perhaps I was too subtle when I spoke of the OVER concern of artistes who have their primary vision aimed at longevity. I had always thought of art as a form of expression, not a demonstration of proper manufacturing technique. Perhaps I'm wrong in thinking that a bit more attention to method and conception would help dig us out of the morass in which the art world currently finds itself.
