You could use it, but that would not be my first choice. What you are doing is identical to relining a canvas. There are a variety of relining nostroms; one of my favorites is beeswax melted with Venice Turpentine, applied heated and then carefully pressed down with a warm iron.
It's a lot of work, but it works beautifully.
