If you have as your aim to strip the canvas away from the support, the traditional
method is to adhere a piece of paper of medium weight, like an 80# cover weight,
with a starch adhesive. One of the preferred adhesives is made by boiling sweet
rice starch or (if you can find it) dogtooth violet starch in water to make
a paste, adding a small amount of alum to harden it. A layer of that is applied
to the support and to one side of the paper, adhering the glued sides together
and allowing them to dry hard. The linen is then sized with bunny glue onto
the paper. The bunny glue holds the linen to the paper and dries without buckling.
The idea is to use enough starch to hold the paper fast and barely enough bunny
glue to hold it to the paper (it's easier than it sounds because that's the
way it works out. When you want to remove the linen, just slide a smooth bladed
knife or spatula under the linen and the paper will stick to the board and the
linen can be gently coaxed up from the paper, bringing very little paper with
it.
