If you make up a wax-impregnated varnish and paint over the entire painting, the surface will become a pleasing matte finish. Just melt some wax medium into Damar varnish, lay the painting down to prevent dripping, and paint a an even coating of the varnish onto the surface. It will be dry in a few hours and the surface will be unified.
