I couldn't disagree more. I expect my students to respect and cherish their materials, and discipline themselves to understand their strengths and weaknesses. They must respect what they do enough to use only the best materials and employ them to the very best of their ability.

To me it's simply professionalism. One can take the best materials and produce fugitive results. The discipline necessary to produce permanent work is the same needed to produce superior work. I'm absolutely convinced of this. Art schools are filled with the other stuff: inferior and impermanent efforts.
