In addition to the manuscript cited by Mr. Howard, there are two excellent descriptions of Sargen'ts technique
in Evan Chateris' book on Sargent. There is also a description of Sargent's technique in John Collier's book on portrait
painting. Several of Carolus-Duran's students wrote article on the technique that they learned in CD's studio including
Carrol Beckwith. I cannot summarize it all in this short posting, but the basic idea is to lay in all of the broad planes i in their correct
value and shape without blending the edges of these facets and then to proceed by placing intermediiate planes until the whole is finished
and lifelike. Use a well nourished broad brush and only use linseed and turps. Paint wet-in-wet as much as possible. Pay special attention
to edges in terms of their hardness or softness and lose them wherever possible.

: I admire Mr. Sargents paintings very much, and would like to find out what his technique for portrature was.
