: Not to change the subject of previous postings, but can anyone out there
speak from experience regarding the differences, advantages or disadvantages
of using PVA vs Rabbit Skin glue for sizing canvas or panels? I'm mostly interested
in technical pros & cons, as opposed to emotional preference.

Contrary to the other postings in this thread, I must chime in on the side
of (acid free) PVA as a sizing for linen or cotton canvas. In a recent email
correspondence with Robert Gamblin who is in touch with the latest research
coming out of the conservation community, I was informed that glue is an inferior
sizing medium in so much as it is hygroscopic and subject to mold attack. Its
use in old paintings accounts in part for the lifting away of the priming from
the cloth; its expansion and contraction in changing humidity can lead to the
flaking off of the priming and paint. Although PVA is a relatively new material
and, thus, does not yet have the sanction of time, it is promising in so much
as it is not hygroscopic and is not subject to mold attack. If there is some
concern about its ability to adequately fill the interstices of the canvas weave
then it might be combined with pigment and applied several times both front
and back
to fill up the gaps and, thus, insure that the oil priming does not come into
direct. contact with the cloth
