I've been painting with acylics since they came out in the 50's and can tell you that the effects for which you are searching cannot be got with acrylic. It does not readily lend itself to anything more realistic than broken field painting. The choice of artists who do ultra-realistic work is gouache (water-base) or oils. Nothing does it like those two, although watercolor and casein can produce excellent results in skiled hands). Trying to get smooth passages with acrylics is like trying to drive a delivery van in the Grand Prix. Of the major paint mediums, acrylic and egg tempera are among the least adaptable. It is the last medium I would recommend to a beginner learning to paint, unless easy wash-up is your prime consideration.
