A good book to purchase is the little paperback titles BRUSHES by Jacques Turner, in which he details how brushes are made. You we see that all brushes are held into the ferrule with an adhesive. This adhesive can be easily damaged by strong-than-turpentine solvents, harsh soaps, citrus cleaners and detergents. I suspect that ultrasonic cleaners might be able to crumble the rather brittle adhesive.
