: it was suggested that aluminum stearate be added to certain metal based
colors to improve binding during grinding. but i have not been able to find
a pharmaceutically pure version of it and it often contains many fatty acids
creating a danger to oil paint stability. Does someone know of either:
: 1. a source of pure aluminum stearate or
: 2. a different additive that may bring about similar result?

You're operating with partial information. Aluminum stearate is added to the opaque colors, not exclusively metal based colors (whatever those are). Aluminum hydrate is used with the more transparent pigments. Hydrate holds considerably more oil than stearate, but recent findings show pigments which hold a great deal of oil (such as Ivory Black) are not nearly the culprit they were once thought to be.
I have no idea what "pharmaceutically pure " aluminum stearate is as compared to the stuff we buy in 55 pound bags. What is the problem with the technical grade? What fatty acids are you afraid of incorporating with the fatty acids in linseed oil?
: Please respond only if experienced professional. Thank you.
