: What is the best method for gluing a canvas [a painting in progress] onto
a wooden board or masonite?
: Would it be better to wait until the painting is finished? Has anyone ever
tried this?
Yes. I do it all the time. If it is a small picture (under 24") rabbitskin glue is a good choice. Anything over that requires a sticky mix of beeswax melted into Venice Turpentine (this is a thick honey-like resin, not the paint thinner). The warm mixture is applied with a spatula to a panel or canvas which has been warmed. The new canvas is laid onto it and pressed or rolled (use a slip sheet). Roll the canvas around the edges and adhere it to the back.
Rabbitskin glue will set up in an hour and be dry withing a day. The relining mixture (wax and resin) will take several days to harden up.
Do not use Elmer's Glue, acrylic medium and any other quick and dirty methods unless you don't mind problems appearing in a few months.
