: That, to me, is a clear warning to back off on the proportion of resin to oil. The STANDARD ART SCHOOL PAINTING MEDIUM of 1/3 turps, 1/3 damar varnish and 1/3 nameless oil dries to have much more than 1/3 resin in it because the turps evaporates leaving only dried resin and the solids in oil in equal proportion.

I think that’s a good surmise. Soft resins are a problem. Maroger is probably the worst offender because mastic is softer than dammar. Maroger is basically a third resin, third turp, and a third oil (with litharge).

One thing that stands out about our host’s technique is the use of retouch varnish as a medium. Retouch varnish is suitable for sketching, or the most direct alla prima technique, which is not Alexei’s approach at all. The key is oiling out each layer. The thin application of oil transforms the retouch varnish into a version of the more widely used (not really traditional) oil-dammar-turp medium.

His technique is interesting because of the many, many layers he uses.
