: Does anyone have suggestions regarding the best alternative to canvas as a surface for painting in oils?

: Is masonite still in common use?

This is and will always be a big question for the artist. Masonite is very good but it's weight (with bracing) becomes a factor in very large works. Also there are many hardboard makers out there it is very important to know exactly what you are buying - "standard hardboard", "untempered", "wet process" are some terms to look for. There are other choices - synthetic polyester canvas, high quality plywood, aluminium, a canvas attached to panel. They each have their good and bad points. I'm sure many of us artists would love to have the definitive book written on supports for painting.
