I felt that way about Ingres' "Princesse de Broglie" at the Met. There's no substitute for seeing a work in person.
Some artists whose work is much better "live": David, Delacroix, and (especially) Gainsborough.
Some whose works disappoint when viewed "live": Corot, most Impressionists, Reynolds, Picasso.
IMHO the best single museum/gallery room in the world is the one at the Louvre where the giant Delacroixs and Davids are hanging. A high point of my life was being able to visit that room five consecutive days several years ago.
