Getting that 150 year old look!
Hmmmmm! How can I put this? I restore paintings mostly 18-19th century. I'm such an avid restorer that sometimes there isn't a picture to start with in the first place. Well, everything goes OK and the what do you know the varnish even cracks - courtacy of a French company that manufacture a special '2 compound' varnish. The trouble is after the final coat I still have a "I'm 50 years old not 150 years old" look due to a slight glossy lustre. I've tried really fine sandpaper and petrol but I can't dull it down. The obvious answer is a matt varnish but the smell screams out "I'm 2 months old!!!" - not desirable. Anyone any ideas? Have a look at the detail, which unfortunately hasn't come out that well:
