This question is really too broad for a single answer. There are many, many mediums, each with its own set of strengths, weaknesses, and best practices.
If you are new to painting, it's best to create your own medium rather than rely on a commercial brand. First, many commercial suppliers will not divulge ingredients; second, if you rely on a specific supplier that subsequently goes out of business you'll be in a bad spot (one of my fears).
Most commercial mediums can be reproduced at home for a fraction of its retail costs.
They are many books on this subject: Mayer's "Painter's Handbook," or "Formulas for Painters" to name just two.
One last piece of advice: Follow your own nose! Don't put too much faith in the do's or don'ts of some so-called expert. Experiment!
