Maroger's medium is made with oil and mastic plus litharge (and turp, of course). Use of the dryer (litharge) causes the mixture to gel. Surely the absence of dryer does not result in Meglip. So what does?
Even assuming the permanence of Maroger's medium (hotly debated), many artist find its lack of body off-putting. This explains why many add wax or move to a mixed technique incorporating tempera, at least in the whites.
A recipe favored by some is: equal parts oil, mastic, turp, and a spoonful of litharge which is stirred once (like a martini!) in the mix then strained. This mix is blonde (no black oil) and gels just like mixtures with black oil.
