: Could anyone post qualified information on technique of Lord Leighton and the academics, or the technique of Delacroix, the manner in which he mixed and applied paint?
In regard to Leighton's technique, his biographer Barrington has several notes
on his practice - Along with his assistant Costa he developed a modified version
of Eastlake's Venetian
technique involving a grisaille underpainting using black, white, and red, glazing
on the local colors, scumbling with black, white, and red, and finishing in
full color. He seems to have used Roberson's Medium (a copal macquilp) and was
very anxious to abtain lean colors from his colorman.
In regard to Delacroix's technique, there are numerous notes in his Journals.
His late technique was quite complex, involving many mixtures on a scaled palette.
This is painstakingly
detailed in a rare book by his pupil and assistant DePlanet.
