: : Can one achieve the warmth and luminosity found in paintings by Titian for example using acrylics?: _____________________________________________: Absolutely not. : If you are afraid of turpentine (the only solvent to fear) use oil of spike for mixing and mineral spirits for washing the brushes. If those are too much for you, use anothe medium but don't expect watercolor to look like pastel or acrylics to look like oils. If you are a prudent and careful apinter, oils are perfectly safe. If, however, you can't paint without getting it on your hands and clothing, use a water-based medium like acrylics.
I did a portrait of my sister in acrylics where is just layed layer and layer of real thin glazes of paint over one another and it turned out as good as my oils. It took me about a week to do but it came out with a real depth to it that I like a lot. Working in glazes like that, like Titian did, is one of acrylics strongest points. But if you need it to stay wet longer get a fine mist hair spary bottle filled with water and spray your painting down every few minutes. It keeps the paint wet.
