:If you study the techniques of Russian iconography, you will find that gold
leaf is the first application to a gessoed board (smooth, not textured) after
teh drawing is done. The gold leaf is not burnished or sealed yet. Next comes
the paint, in this case, tempera. In order for teh tempera to adhere to the
gold leaf, you need to, believe it or not, rub the gold leaf with cut garlic
! So cut up a clove of garlic ... the idea is for teh garlic oil to be rubbed
on to the gold leaf surface. When it is tacky, you can then paint on that surface.
I have used this technique and applied rough charcoal to solidify the drawing,
and then applied successive very transparent glazes of oil paint in earth colours
- it looks wonderful !
