Yours is not the ideal for applying leaf. Gold leaf is very different from foil in that it will disintegrate if you blow on it. It's very thin and delicate. You can apply an oil varnish to the heavily textured area abd apply the leaf, but frankly it will only look a little better than if you sprayed gold paint from a spray can.
True gold leaf attempts to look as though the surface is a polished block of gold. If you textured that polished surface it would look like spatter paint.
