Well, one old-school art teacher of mine thought you should keep the sketchbook in your coat pocket... that's right, don't even look at the drawing as you're making it. Doing this can result in inadvertently staring a hole in your subject, though, so be prepared to defend yourself.

I often sketch at the beach or the pool, or get people when they're fishing. Of course, where you go depends on whether you want a static, rendered sketch or a loose, gestural movement.

Another good thing is to keep yourself at a 45 degree angle from the subject... Your head straight ahead and only your eyes move then. Maybe put a newspaper or magazine in your lap to cover the sketchbook.

: Does anyone have any ideas on where is the best place to do this? Libraries, restaurants, is wearing sunglasses helpful? Thank you Justine
