Alla prima vs. more polished underpainting/glazing technique
Which technique do you favor ?
Why?
Is there some advantage to having visible
brushstrokes/blotchy color/ heavy paint application?
What ?
I always hear of something being described positively
as 'painterly' meaning heavy brushstrokes.
I hear of the 'artist's hand' being visible.
Isn't it visible in layered technique with a
smooth finish?
Is it that smooth is too close looking to modern
techniques of photography? Illustration?
Thanks for your opinions.
