Traditional gesso is a relatively brittle mixture that would crack if applied to canvas. You can make a glue/oil emulsion gesso that will be more flexible, but it's a bit of a trick to do.
Working on gesso coated canvas (especially acrylic "gesso") is to work on an abrasive surface that rapidly degrades your brushes.
The best ground for canvas is to isolate the canvas with a glue size and then apply a coat of oil based white lead, allowing it to dry for several months. Re: Seeking traditional gesso recipe Marilyn
