(You got me: I guess Rodney King isn't the greatest spokesman.) As it happens, I never took art in high school myself. I had signed up for it, but when on the second day the teacher announced that we would be going outside to collect leaves to iron between slips of waxed paper, I got out of there quick.
I'm still inclined to take a more romantic view of the artist than as simply
a practitioner of a "trade." The artist has a calling not only to seek mastery
of his/her chosen medium but to create a unique expression which evolves (is
discovered) through his/her practice. It's a little different from going into
plumbing. Although, I agree totally that there are many who turn naively to
art thinking it's going to be the solution to their poor ability to think and
solve problems, or to their midlife crises. Worse, these people enhance the
general misperception that there is this peculiar "creative" or "artistic" personality
characterized by extreme emotionalism, unreliability and other annoying personal
qualities.
