It's odd that that quote, from a convicted serial felon, should have got transmogrified into something from the Ghetto Ghandi. Beleive me, Emily, people who make such pronunciamentos are not the ones you want to encounter in a dark alley. Some people are just not worth the effort. Some are downright destructive. We are not created equal.
I understand the frustration you feel with what you learned in the university art department. The art historian, Sir Herbert Read, stated that they were founded on, "the detritus of defunct empires and hoped to blend their politics with bureaucratic gold to produce a new Golden Age." He went on to say that universities never had and never would be a crucible for creative thinking in the visual arts. He knew, as I know, that it's a trade, not a priesthood.
I certainly hope that you can manage to keep the creative spark alive in a few kids because those years were the most deadening to my art.
