Re: Why compete with a photo?
Okay I will try my hand at this one.” What's left to express or to prove through ultra realistic painting?” Well in short, a lot !!! Then again nothing. Let me explain at least the way I see it. There’s really no difference in anyway you paint, there all equal. Be it impressionism, expression, abstract, realistic…. etc. It really has nothing to do with you THE ARTIST their only tools we use to tell our visual stories. Oh I guess a realist artist might have you believe he’s above all the rest because of his technical prowess. Or an abstractionist with his Ultra simplicity. It really comes down to you the person who wants to share with the world or himself firstly an inner vision he and only he can convey personally onto that prepared linen.. I might be repeating myself here but the pen is a tool as well, not unlike our paint brushes, the paper our canvas. Is it all that important if we write well or legible or is it the story that counts. Technically yes we must write the story with an understanding of good grammar and English. This is also similar to our technical background in knowing your brushes, mediums, values…etc. But if I was to write a Hemingway word for word, or copy what did I do. Maybe if I changed some words around I might be getting somewhere but really if I was to tell a story of my life or a slant of it then I would be called a writer/artist. We can go further with this and say there are different writers. Such as reporters, historical, fiction…etc. not unlike us Fine Artists. Saying all that, a realist artist can be down right awful even if his technical abilities are good if he simply copied a photograph. The mark for me is what did he say and how did he arrange the subject to give you that . Did he direct the colors in a manner that speaks. In short did he tell a story. That’s where the magic lie’s. I’ve seen some nice realistic paintings and I’ve seen some horrible stuff lacking any human emotion not unlike the camera that coughs it out. So what’s left to express???? Use your imagination, the field is still open, it doesn’t matter how you paint only that this World we live in needs your creativity, love, and care. In short we want you and how you see this world thru your eyes. Be it realistic or otherwise.
