Underpainting with a complimentary will create a greater depth to the paint. My portraits of caucasian women have a porcelain skin quality because of painting colors between green to blue under the final fleshtones.

Picking a proper complementary color is easy if you use a color wheel. Grumbacher makes a useful and inexpensive one.
