SOFT LAYER!!! BIG PROBLEM!!
I have a huge problem!!!! I am painting a portrait for a client. Oil on panel. I use the underpainting technique. I am about 95% finished. I was just using my mall stick to work on the details of the fabric and it seems to have taken a small amount of paint off the background color. It is a simple background of just a dark blueish grey color over a burnt sienna underpainting. The underpainting is fine but the over layer is very soft!!! I am wondering what to do???!!!
Has anyone had this problem before when they have come accross a layer of paint or a certain color being very cratchable? Is it the paint quality? Medium?
I am pretty sure I used cobalt blue, ivory black, cadmium red med, and titanium. The suface was covered with one layer. The white made it opaque even though it isn't that thick of a layer it is probably the thickest i ever go. It was done about 5 or more months ago so I would think it would be dry by now. I used a small amount of Liquin as a flow aid as too much will make it transparent.
I am thinking of changing the color anyways so it is no big deal but I dont want my painting to be structurally weak.
any ideas? anyone else been in my shoes?
thanks in advance for the replies.
