Re-touch varnish and gloss

I need some info on dulling re-touch varnish. I recently completed a portrait and decided to use
re-touch varnish for temporary protection until I can use a permanent varnish. The damar re-touch made
the painting much more glossy than the new owner likes. I have never used re-touch varnish (or any damar
varnish) before and I don't know if this gloss can be diminished now or even later. I will get the portrait
back in 6 months for final varnish. Will a commercial matte varnish return the surface to a non-glossy
state? Can I diminish the gloss in any way now?
Thanks.
