Hi Tim

No matter how talented a painter is some knowledge of basic paint technology is needed. If Mary does not know which mediums to use and why they are needed she will do damage to herself professionally, would you ask some one to work for you if they had no knowledge of the basics of their profession?

Your advice is good for those who paint as a hobby.

In real terms if Mary was commisioned by a customer who has some knowledge about art and asked questions on what materials she would use and why, would the answer "I don't know, but I'm a good painter" get her the commission?

I'm not saying Mary should take an art degree but if she is in the realms of being a professional artist she should be theoretically and practically competent.

This is not an attack on Tim or Mary but being able to answer such questions confidently does give the artist inner confidence and the customer goes away happy knowing they have chosen some one who knows what they are at.
