: I am using a medium of 5 ounces of turpentine to 1 ounce of copal for the
imprimatura.
: As the layers become more fluid and viscous, what medium should I resort to?

Whatever mixture you start with, as a rule, should be used throughout the painting
adding a tad more oil (stand, walnut or linseed) as you go. You want subsequent
layers to have the same constitution so they will adhere to each other and avoid
cracking.
