"Take it personally? No way! I just think it's hilarious how bold people are, including you, in stating what is 'absolutely' right."
As far as I can see, I did not state what is absolutely right. I just said
it is a wrong thing to present, like a revelation, the naive fact that we can
paint with paint and turp only. I did not ever mention a medium or anything.
So, like I said, there is no exclusive truth, but there are definitly wrong
conceptions.
"So I'm asking for opinions without the hype of their 'magic' formula, as you
and your turpentine, or others with maroger, etc."
Me and my turpentine? Are you sure you understood what I have said? I do not advocate the use of turpentine nor i dismiss it. I just pointed out those who preach for it's use like the only necessary tool. Like those inexperienced genius, I was talking about spirit of turpentine, the solvent. Venetian turpentine or canada balsam are very usefull tools, but the inexperienced genius consider them as useless false magic elixirs because they just do not know what they are.
Understand this: an experienced painter can take the decision to paint with relatively simples tools. That's a matter of personal taste, style, techniques, etc. Again, there is no exclusive truth and there are many ways to paint. The absurd thing is a 20 years old guy with a very limited experience that claims loudly and exlusively that only turp and cold pressed linseeed oil must be used, fighting the selfmade idea that someone claims to have magic elixirs. One day he claims that only a dry surface must be use, the next day he claims that he just discovered that a lubricated surface works better. That's ok to discover new things. Painting is a complex world and we all discover new things. The sad part is that the young genius was accusing Rob Howard of giving bad advices the day he was figting the idea of working on a lubricated surface. What a joke.
So I'm asking for opinions without the hype of their 'magic' formula, as you
and your turpentine, or others with maroger, etc. But this is useful. What kind
of turpentine do you use? Should we ONLY use English distilled? How much venential
turpentine? Pray tell, and don't take it personally of course. . (laughing)
