Does someone suggest you a "magic medium"? The only persons I have seen talking about "magic mediums" are those who fight this selfmade illusion. Most seems to be beginners who have little or no experience, suggesting to paint with student grade paints because they are not even advanced enough to understand the difference between tinted alumina hydrate and highly pigmented paints. Everybody knows that it is possible to paint with paint and turp only. It is not a big truth, just a basic insignificant fact. That does not mean that more advanced material is "magic" or "illusion" because it won't paint for you. Only an ignorant with false expectation will conclude something like this. Most carpenters have electrical tools and many more that hepls them in their job. None of these tools works alone, which do not make them "false magic". They are very usefull even if it is possible to do a "similar" job with more basic tools. The only thing is that it will be much longer and everything will be "a bit less" if an amateur try to do the same job with a hammer and a simple hand saw. A bit less in art is the difference between outstanding and just average. Any experienced artist can make a good painting with paint and turp only. The only thing is that they will do a lot better with better material.
Don't take this post personaly Lindsey, I just want to point out this sad misconception that we are given a revelation in the basic fact that we can paint with paint only. This is a pointless evidence. I can go to New York with a car, a bicycle, a motorcycle, with my running shoes only, with a F-16. None of these alternative is an exclusive truth that makes the others an illusion.
