: EGG EMULSIONS INCREASE STABILITY!!!!??? you need to get Ralph Mayer's book
BADLY!!!
: my egg tempera friend.
This is easy. Scientific evidence demonstrates tempera in Rembrandt and Caravaggio
paintings; many authors discuss the benefits of a mixed oil/tempera technique;
my own experience convinces me; Mayer disparages it. Gee, I’m Stumped :-)
Mayer is a perfect example of why we need to take technique "experts" with a grain of salt. His basic approach is sound: Use common sense, there's no old master secrets, don't try to substitute some magic potion for basic drawing skills, etc. Yet he recommends the wretched damar/oil/turp medium, which, like maroger, trys to be all things to all people and is worthless.
The old masters were great craftsmen. They pushed their *simple* materials to the edge, creating paintings of many layers, and with the widest breadth of treatment. Oil/tempera can do this. Damar medium is simple minded; a one-chord Johnny. Mayer is like the preacher preaching fire and brimstone then running to the whore house.
So, what is common sense for technique? That which best achieves the ends of
painting. Which is? That which enables the broadest range of expression.
