If I understand the question correctly; yes the emulsion film dries with a
slight degree of porosity. It's hardly spongy and absolutely no danger to the
paint film. If it were, egg tempera and casein paintings would be at risk, but
they are among the longest lived of paint mediums. The disparity between layers
in Rembrandt's paintings is due to his using different, specialised mediums
to produce specific effects. One size (or medium) does NOT fit all.
